Abstract
Carlos J. Finlay was born in Camaguey, Cuba, Dec. 3, 1833, to Edward Finlay, a Scottish physician, and Eliza de Barres, a Frenchwoman born in Trinidad. He graduated in 1855 with an M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he was noted as persistent and patient. Sila Weir Mitchell, Finlay's classmate, tried to persuade Finlay to practice in the United States, but Finlay decided to return to Cuba. In 1860 he traveled to France to further his studies, returning in 1864 to Matanzas, Cuba, and later establishing his residence in Havana in 1865.
